Weekly Update Sept 2nd – 8th

General Update

Hello everyone!

Time really is flying this year isn’t it? These weeks just keep on rolling by! I had another quiet book week because I have been busy watching the US Open Tennis and catching up on season 4 of The 100.

I also got a bunch of new ARC review requests which I think I am going to have to turn down because I just am not reading as much as I normally do right now. With my illness I get excessively fatigued so I think that’s the real reason behind the reading slow down. But it is what it is!

Additionally, it was my birthday this past week and I have to give a great big shout out to my dear friend Gabby (who I met through Goodreads and with whom I co-moderate a Goodreads YA book group) because she sent me the nicest present for my birthday; a lovely copy of Kass Morgan’s Sci Fi spectacular ‘Light Years’. Kass Morgan who wrote the original The 100 book which the series I am currently obsessed with is based on!!! Gabby also has a great blog @A Gathering of Books and Magic so it would be awesome if you guys could help me boost her follower count as a thank you. Plus she writes fabulous reviews that are both insightful and incredibly funny.

What I read

I just read two books this week and did not particularly love either. Both books were eARCs from NetGalley.

First up I read The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh and while I really enjoyed the atmosphere created within this book I felt the characters were a little lacking. I will be posting my review of it this week so keep your eyes out for that.

And the other book I read is an English translation of a book that has been hugely popular in Korea. I love getting to read translations as I think they can give us a real insight into the lifestyles and cultural differences of other countries. The book is called ‘Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982’, written by Cho Nam-Joo and translated by Jamie Chang. It’s an interesting if heavy handed look into ingrained sexism that exists in Korean society. As with The Beautiful I will be posting my review of it later this week.

What I am reading currently

I just started another eARC from NetGalley last night. This one is written by Alice Hoffman who is probably best known for writing ‘Practical Magic’. The book I’m reading is called ‘The World that We Knew’. Here’s the blurb from Goodreads:

In Berlin in 1941 during humanity’s darkest hour, three unforgettable young women must act with courage and love to survive.

In Berlin, at the time when the world changed, Hanni Kohn knows she must send her twelve-year-old daughter away to save her from the Nazi regime. She finds her way to a renowned rabbi, but it’s his daughter, Ettie, who offers hope of salvation when she creates a mystical Jewish creature, a rare and unusual golem, who is sworn to protect Lea. Once Ava is brought to life, she and Lea and Ettie become eternally entwined, their paths fated to cross, their fortunes linked.

Lea and Ava travel from Paris, where Lea meets her soulmate, to a convent in western France known for its silver roses; from a school in a mountaintop village where three thousand Jews were saved. Meanwhile, Ettie is in hiding, waiting to become the fighter she’s destined to be.

What does it mean to lose your mother? How much can one person sacrifice for love? In a world where evil can be found at every turn, we meet remarkable characters that take us on a stunning journey of loss and resistance, the fantastical and the mortal, in a place where all roads lead past the Angel of Death and love is never ending.

Book reviews

The following are the book reviews that I posted to my blog this week:

Book tags, wrap ups and memes

Goodreads Monday this week was all about A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post focused on books that I have enjoyed that are out of my comfort zone.

I wrapped up my entire August reading month in a post here.

For this week’s Thursday Discussion I wrote about the books that I think everyone should read.

And lastly I was tagged by my friend Alys to do The Guilty Reader Book Tag.

And that’s another week on my blog wrapped up!!!

I’m going to leave you all with a YouTube link to John Mayer’s latest track ‘Carry Me Away’. I’ve been playing it constantly since it dropped on Friday. Here’s to a great reading week ahead for all of us.

  1. Omg! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMER!! Hope it was an amazing one and that sounds like a really lovely gift! 😍
Also, that US Open Women’s Final! Ugh. I missed the men’s final but will watch a recap of it after work 😅 Hope you have a great week ahead!

      1. Haha far too long in the tooth! I don’t believe that! But I’m also not one for big do’s so I understand. It has apparently become tradition for me to indulge in maccas and a glass of wine (LMAO oddest combo ever) but that’s basically it 😂
