Title: I Will Marry George Clooney by Christmas

Author: Tracy Bloom

Genre/Themes: Light Fiction, Contemporary, Thirty-something

There comes a time in every woman’s life when the only answer is to marry George Clooney.

For Michelle, that time is now.

Slogging her guts out in a chicken factory whilst single-handedly bringing up a teenager who hates her is far from the life that 36-year-old Michelle had planned.

But marrying the most eligible man on the planet by Christmas could change all that, couldn’t it?

Sometimes your only option is to dream the impossible – because you never know where it might take you.

My Review

This was very much a run-of-the-mill light fiction.

It tells the story of Michelle, a thirty something single mother stuck in a dead end job with a very humdrum life. In an attempt to gain her fifteen year old daughter’s respect she makes a bet that she will meet and marry George Clooney by Christmas.

The story then follows Michelle’s various attempts to catch George Clooney’s attention and her efforts to restore her vigour for life.

This book has some funny moments but mostly it felt a little flat. I know that with books like these they typically follow a formula and therefore one doesn’t tend to expect surprises from the plot…

But the attempted twists and surprises in this story REALLY didn’t work for me.

Everything was too predictable and formulaic.

And the “Christmas” finale didn’t really justify the Christmas in the book title or the seasonal colour scheme of the front cover; I wouldn’t really classify this as a Christmas read at all as I got none of those warm Christmassy feelings nor any great Christmassy atmosphere from this book at all.

Overall it was a somewhat diverting read but not one that would cause me to seek out any other titles by this author.
