On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me …

This beautiful collection features twelve gorgeously romantic stories set during the festive period, by some of the most talented and exciting YA authors writing today.

The stories are filled with the magic of first love and the magic of the holidays.

My Review

As with all collections of this sort, some stories I preferred more than others. What follows are my thoughts about each story in this collection.

STORY 1: Midnights

Written by Rainbow Rowell

SO FREAKING CUTE!!!!

Why can’t Rainbow Rowell’s books give me the same feels as this fabulous little story?

*shudders at the memory of the train wreck that is Fangirl*

ANYWAY!

This story, Midnights, was so incredibly adorable and I loved everything about it. Made me feel so warm and cosy, like a mug of creamy hot chocolate with marshmallows! A perfect opener.

STORY 2: The Lady and the Fox

Written by Kelly Link

Weird and wonderful; I still don’t quite know what happened but I know I liked it!

A very solid second story.

STORY 3: Angels in the Snow

Written by Matt de la Peña

This had a melancholic and bittersweet vibe to it which I really liked. It’s nice to acknowledge that the festive season isn’t all sweetness and light. I liked this a whole lot!

STORY 4: Polaris is Where You’ll Find Me

Written by Jenny Han

YAWN!!!

Got bored, confused… pretty much lost the will to live…. Really not the quality of story that I’d expect from the typically fabulous Jenny Han.

STORY 5: It’s a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown

Written by Stephanie Perkins

Sheer Christmas perfection. There is absolutely nothing I’d change about this story.

….And yet Stephanie Perkins is the same author who gave us the absolute mess that is ‘Lola and The Boy Next Door’!!! That is one of my most loathed contemporary YA reads EVER! Guess authors can happily still surprise us!

STORY 6: Your Temporary Santa

Written by David Levithan

Oh this was incredibly adorable and had these touching moments of sadness and joy.

Fabulous!

STORY 7: Krampuslauf

Written by Holly Black

Nope!!!

Let’s just move swiftly on….

STORY 8: What The Hell Have You Done Sophie Roth?

Written by Gayle Forman

A really cute Hanukkah themed story that I enjoyed. I love that this book includes Hanukkah and not just Christmas because I know absolutely nothing about Hanukkah and how it’s celebrated.

And omg the whole apple pie and cheese thing in the story sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!

And in case you think that it’s weird just remember that a good strong cheese and apple are a natural pairing; a ploughman’s lunch frequently combines the bread, cheese and pickles with apples!!!

STORY 9: Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus

Written by Myra McEntire

Honestly, I was just bored.

What happened??

Pfffftttt….

Did I care???

That would be a no….

STORY 10: Welcome to Christmas, CA

Written by Kiersten White

Somewhere between cute and meh…

The premise was great but it lacked for me in the execution. Short stories have to really grab your attention quickly for them to work… and this didn’t do that.

STORY 11: Star of Bethlehem

Written by Ally Carter

Quite an unusual and almost random premise!! But it was indeed intriguing.

Decent.

STORY 12: The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer

Written by Laini Taylor

What an un-Christmassy ending!! A supremely quirky and very weird story but come on!!! I wanted to end with tinsel and sparkle!

Just disappointing. Would have been a whole lot better if Santa had made an appearance #JustSaying

But on the whole this was a pretty enjoyable bunch of stories which make for pleasant reading during the festive season.

      1. I read the first two books and was like uh no. I’m sorry but it’s not healthy for someone to lust after you because you hate them.
