Light Years by Kass Morgan – Book Review

Blurb from Goodreads

Reeling from the latest attack by a mysterious enemy, the Quatra Fleet Academy is finally admitting students from every planet in the solar system after centuries of exclusivity.

Hotshot pilot Vesper, an ambitious Tridian citizen, dreams of becoming a captain – but when she loses her spot to a brilliant, wisecracking boy from the wrong side of the asteroid belt, it makes her question everything she thought she knew. Growing up on the toxic planet Deva, Cormak will take any chance he can get to escape his dead-end life and join the Academy – even if he has to steal someone’s identity to do it. Arran was always considered an outsider on icy Chetire, always dreaming of something more than a life working in the mines. Now an incoming cadet, Arran is looking for a place to belong – he just never thought that place would be in the arms of a Tridian boy. And Orelia is hiding a dark secret – she’s infiltrated the Academy to complete a mission, one that threatens the security of everyone there. But if anyone finds out who she really is, it’ll be her life on the line.

These cadets will have to put their differences aside and become a team to defend their world from a cunning enemy – but the danger might be lurking closer to home than they think…

My Review

Omg I loved this book!!!

And yet there are many reasons why I shouldn’t love it…. (Shaky plot, book is basically a set up for the sequel, writing is nothing special, ultimately the premise is a lot like other books I’ve read and telly shows I’ve seen…)

But love it I did!!!

It is the very definition of trashy space opera and I was living my best life on every page.

The story follows four cadets at an elite academy (Quatra Fleet Academy) that are put together to create their own squadron, Squadron 20. This is the first year that people from disadvantaged planets have been allowed to apply to the academy and that automatically creates a lot of tension between those who believe that “edgers” shouldn’t be allowed to join and those that are from these outlying planets.

Each cadet in Squadron 20 has their own unique backstory.

There’s Cormak who gets assigned the captain’s role.

Cormak is a poor kid from a toxic planet called Deva and gains entry to the elite academy through less than honest means… BUT HE DESERVES IT COS SMART! FUNNY!! HAS NOW A CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF TO ALL THESE STUCK UP ENTITLED TRIDIANS!!! WOO!!!!

So obvs we have to have a stuck up Tridian on the crew…

Enter Vesper.

She was gunning for the captain’s position but ends up *only* as the pilot. Vesper’s mum is some big kahuna in the Quatra Fleet and had to pull strings to get Vesper into the programme and she’s riding Vesper hard to prove herself. ALL the parental pressure…

And I mean lol if you can’t guess that sparks will fly between Cormak and Vesper.

Next up is my delicious little cutie Arran.

He’s from a planet called Chetire which was apparently a miserable AF existence with him and his mum barely getting by. Arran just basically wants to feel like he belongs somewhere. HE WANTS SOMEONE TO LOVE SO THERE IS A WHOLE ROMEO AND JULIET STAR CROSSED DOOMED LOVERS ROMANCE FOR HIM AND AHHHHHHHHH I DIE!!!!!! Him and Dash are just so freaking cute…but Dash’s dad is another one who is a kahuna in the Quatra Fleet hierarchy and he’s just basically a big old bundle of xenophobia so that’s gonna be *drama*.

And then there’s my girl Orelia….

SUPER SPY EXTRAORDINAIRE who infiltrates the academy and gives us the other side of the story of the “baddies”… And then she has this connection with her super spy teacher Zafir and urghhhh you know it won’t end well!!!!!

So this group of four all band together and become a super tight knit group and the book just follows this progression AND IT IS CHEESY AF BUT I LOVED IT ALL!!!

And it ends on a freaking cliffhanger so obvs I’m starting book two as soon as I finish writing this ridiculous review.

Four stars for the enjoyment!!!

  1. Oh YES YES YES! You literally had me at ‘trashy space opera’. I don’t care if it’s predictable or set up for a sequel… these kinda of stories make me so happy. I love reading about a misfit type group. It has an Aurora Rising vibe in that regard. Awesome post Emer!
