This Cruel Design (This Mortal Coil #2) by Emily Suvada – Spoiler Book Review

Blurb from Goodreads

Where can you hide if you’re running from yourself?

In bunkers and strongholds across the world, people are celebrating. There’s a vaccine to the virus that has ravaged the planet for years.

But the celebrations won’t last for long.

The vaccine isn’t working. The virus is evolving. Catarina – genehacker, reluctant warrior – must find the one person who can help her.

Time is ticking, she only has three days before shadowy gentech corporation Cartaxus will use lethal code to wipe out every person on the planet’s surface.

Kill the hosts, kill the virus.

Forced to question everything she knows and everyone she trusts, Cat discovers that the biggest threat of all may be buried in her own mind.

The end of the world is approaching. Can she stop it?

My Review

OMG THIS FREAKING BOOK!

I’m beyond obsessed with this series. Book two (This Cruel Design) picks up just a week or two after the events of book one (This Mortal Coil) and the repercussions are just…..

I MEAN AHHHHHHHHH!!

*incoherent screaming and general head exploding-ness*

DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVE NOT READ BOOK ONE, THIS MORTAL COIL BECAUSE THE FABULOUSNESS OF THAT BOOK WILL BE RUINED WITH SPOILERY STUFF.

I’m just gonna play it safe and whack the whole thing in spoiler tags because I would just be so sad if I spoiled book one for anyone.

Also consider this spoilery for actual book two because I just don’t know how to talk about this series without spoilers

SO SPOILERS FOR THIS MORTAL COIL AND THIS CRUEL DESIGN

Like I mean it.

REALLY REALLY SPOILERY GUYS. THIS WILL RUIN THE BOOKS FOR YOU IF YOU READ IT.

So if you haven’t actually read the second book but have read the first then just drop what you’re doing right now and start reading This Cruel Design.

And if even more ridiculously you haven’t read book one This Mortal Coil well omg you need to rectify that like right this second.

Go!!!!!

Read!!!!!!!

As for the rest of you let’s go on an adventure in fangirling…..

First up I am BEYOND in love with the whole science system of these books. Book one really set up the gene technology and cloning in a really interesting way; it just grounded it all in enough scientific theory (like 3%) that made the other speculative 97% seem somewhat plausible.
Like don’t get me wrong, the science is crazy BUT IN THE BEST POSSIBLE SENSE!

So after book one dropped that bombshell that Cat and June Bei are one and the same how could this book get even more batshittier…. BY MAKING THEM TWO MINDS CO EXISTING IN THE ONE BODY

Consider my mind well and truly blown.

Is this a bit like a soap opera….like when Joey’s soap opera character on Friends had a brain transplant with Susan Sarandon….. YES. IT IS ALL THAT KIND OF CRAZY AND MORE!!

But omg I couldn’t read this book fast enough. The twists kept coming at me and I was just here living my best life. I’m writing this review on Saturday, 18th January knowing that I have to wait until this coming Thursday for book two to be released…. I DO NOT KNOW HOW I WILL COPE! Cannot wait for midnight and that pre-ordered sweet little baby to land on my kindle. Can’t imagine how people who actually read this series as and when each of the two first books were released and have had to wait for what must feel like a lifetime. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!

I don’t know what I make of Cole in this book… COLE YOU ARE AN IDIOT BUT I LOVE YOU ANYWAY! Just talk openly Cole. SHARE THOSE THOUGHTS MY LITTLE PRECIOUS SNUGGLEMUFFIN! When he gets all shady and only chatty with Anna it was just never going to end well! MEN! Can’t be dealing. Book three better go fix my Cat and Cole shipping pain.

But omg the one thing that was hanging over my head like a big old party pooping burst balloon HAS BEEN FIXED. WOOOOOOOOOO!

So June Bei and Cole…and Leoben and Anna are all described as siblings (even though only Anna and Cole are genetically related) because of how they grew up together and …. well it made me feel a bit ick with the whole shipping Cat and Cole together because Cat is June Bei… June Bei and Cole are like siblings….. HELLO PSEUDO INCEST STYLE STORYLINE A LA JENNIFER L ARMENTROUT’S SERIOUSLY DODGY CONTEMPORARY “THE PROBLEM WITH FOREVER”

BUT

I DO LOVE A BUT!!

Now it seems that Cat and June Bei are actually not the same person just two persons inhabiting the same body (that looks nothing like June Bei) SO I CAN FEEL HAPPY TO SHIP SHIP SHIP AWAY! You know until Cole has forgotten Cat exists and with that ending maybe Cat has even forgotten she exists….. I JUST DO NOR KNOW ANY MORE. I HAVE A LOT OF FEELS.

Other things I loved about book two: ehhh EVERYTHING!

Woooo the pigeons are back! And this time they’re carriers…..
HAHAHAHAHA BAD PUN JOKE.

Okay… new characters. It’s always fun introducing new characters and Mato was a TREAT!
AND WHEN HIS SURNAME WAS WATSON I WAS LIKE AHHHHH NEW BAD GUY LOOOOOOOOLLLLLL.
AND HA! I was so right that he was seeeeeeeriously shady.

Okay so this theory about anyone being named Watson going to be dodgy stems from book one…

Because when we were introduced to Dax we were told his surname was Crick (and I was like oh he’ll be shady) and when we were introduced to Cole we were told his surname was Franklin (and I was like oh he’ll be the good guy!).

And therefore at the time I said that all the series needs is someone with the surname Watson and we will have the true evil mastermind.

And I know… you’re still like huh? You’re predicting good guys versus bad guys because of surnames?!?!

Sooooo…. SCIENCE LESSON TIME

Watson and Crick are credited with being the discoverers of the structure of DNA. Basically they identified the helix shape. They won the Nobel prize for it back in the day.

But it is mired in a lot of controversy because in order to fully understand how DNA takes its helical shape they used X-ray imagery belonging to another scientist. The other scientist was Rosalind Franklin. And they didn’t exactly ask her permission to look at her experiments so shady shady shady…

So to be very reductive in thinking one would say Watson and Crick are bad
Franklin is good

Ergo Dax named Dax Crick is bad
And Cole named Cole Franklin is good.

And now Mato Watson is also gonna be bad! LOOOOOOLLLL

But yes Mato…. I love how murky a character he is. I can’t properly decide if he’s full on evil or just a very love sick puppy with an unhealthy AF way of showing it…

Regina… eh…. I feel she needed to be in the book a bit more. Died too soon really. And omg CALLED IT! When she was like oh I sorta randomly got pregnant I was like OH IT WAS LACHLAN WASN’T IT AND AHHHHHH I LOVE IT WHEN I AM RIGHT.

Leoben and Dax…. I have to admit I’m a bit baffled by this one. Because Dax was all up in Cat’s business in book one but apparently these two have had a thing for like aaaages… I JUST THINK MY LEOBEN DESERVES BETTER. Dax is just soooo shady… but I’m curious to see things develop in book three. This ship has certainly got potential.

Anna… Initially I was like ugh do we have to have her and Cat be all at loggerheads because you know two strong and powerful women can’t get on apparently eye roll but then I like where Anna’s character arc went with her ^gift^ reveal and that whole protecting Cat in the bunker at the end…. YASSSSS SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES!!!!!!

Lachlan…. I JUST DO NOT KNLW ANYMORE. HE IS SUCH AN OVER THE TOP MISGUIDED VILLAIN… Feels very 70s James Bond villain to me and I am here for it. I need more from the overlord that is Brink though. He’s a bit too bad evil guy in the background. I want a nice big face-off with him in book three please and thank you.

So those are my crazy and VERY spoilery thoughts…

Ughhhhh WHY IS IT NOT THURSDAY YET?? Need to read book three so badly…..

Four stars for sure.

CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS VICIOUS CURE!

  1. Great review? I can’t say for sure because I skipped out when you gave the warning about spoilers ahead. Since the premise sounded amazing, I’ve decided to try the first book and then read your review for the second 😛 Love the Seth Cohen gif… I’ll always be an OC fangirl ❤

    1. YES! READ NO REVIEWS!! Just read the books and enjoy the rollercoaster of different theories that you’ll go on. I’ve had such fun binging this series in the past few days and knowing nothing is the best way forward! :))))

  2. That ending was seriously so insane! Honestly, I haven’t got very far in the last book but I am hoping to finish it today, haha.
