Goodreads Monday (10/08/2020)

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by Lauren’s Page Turners. The meme is pretty easy to follow, to participate simply choose a random book from your TBR and explain why you want to read it!

This week’s book:

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Bound by blood.
Tempted by desire.
Unleashed by destiny.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’ enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

Why I Want to Read This

Honestly…. I don’t know why I want to read this because SJM drives me batty… I started off liking Throne of Glass but got bored. A Court of Thorns and Roses I liked but A Court of Mist and Fury I hated with a passion of ten thousand fiery stars.

But I’m also somewhat of a masochist with a pinch of curios cat on the side…

I’m gonna end up hating myself after I read this aren’t I *sigh*

Have you read this yet? What are your feelings on Sarah J. Maas? Let’s chat in the comments below!

  1. I also have a love-hate relationship with SJM. I love her writing and absolutely loved the first two books in Throne of Glass, but it really gets on my nerves how she has the same formula with her romances, making you fall in love with the first guy and then switching to someone else… It’s definitely personal preference but I can never get on board with books when they do that! I don’t know why, I guess I’m just really stubborn 😂

    1. Oh I agree. Toxic af! The court books were shocking! I don’t get how Rhys is this fantastically loved male lead when he basically sexually assaulted the lead character among other dodginess. But I’m glad that this one is adult fantasy finally. When it’s an adult book I feel a lot more comfortable with the content

  2. “But I’m also somewhat of a masochist with a pinch of curios cat on the side…” 😂😂 I’m curious about this book too, I tell myself I’m not going to read it but since I see it everywhere I’m tempted.

  3. Hahahaha that line being masochistic and a curious cat is so relatable 😂 I actually made a Goodreads shelf called will-curiosity-kill-the-cat for that exact reason. I did enjoy the ACOTAR books and most of the Throne of Glass series but for some reason I’m not so interested in Crescent City. Maybe because the lead characters (especially Hunt) sound like the ones in Maas’ other books 😂

    1. I think my shelf is called to be read if feeling masochistic… I’ve also got a shelf called would rather chew my eyeballs than read… what’s the bets I’ll end up reading some of the titles on that 😂😂😂😂
Oh every mc in a SJM book is the same. I mean her plots are all basically the same so why not her characters too,…. 😆😆😆😆 but glutton for punishment right here ☺️☺️☺️😂😂😂

  4. Hahaha I think I’m very much looking forward to reading your review after you finish reading this one 🙂 I was a fan of her Throne of Glass series but I wasn’t blown away by ACOTAR which is by far the most popular (although I think ToG was better). I hope you read this book haha 😂

  5. Honestly, if you didn’t like either the other series you might not like this either 🤣 I enjoy sjm books but this was similar in the sense that you have a super sassy MC hiding a super special secret and a love interest that is very similar to all her others. It was definitely enjoyable for me! There are some crazy plot twists at the end and I really enjoyed some of the side characters

  6. I felt the opposite with ACOTAR—I didn’t like either ACOTAR or ACOWAR so much, but loooved ACOMAF! That said, given that I only liked 1/3 of the trilogy, I also STILL want to read this SJM monster. I hope you’ll like it when you get to it! 🙂
